Mahina is a Norlin 37, classic ocean cruiser, 37ft long with a sloop rig designed by Peter Norlin and built in 1975 by Shipmann Yard in Sweden.
Made out of solid laminate fibre glass, she has white top sides and a wooden varnished coach roof giving her the unique classic lines. From the original model, she was modified with a raised freeboard of 4 inches, so the coach roof starts from behind the mast with plenty forward flash deck space. Due to this raise, more weight was added to the keel. Mahina has a 15m (from deck) aluminium mast with 2 Spreaders. She is 11,55m long, 3,55m beam and 2,3m in draught.
In the first ten years, the first owner, German, then named Zingara, sailed her from Sweden to Germany, round into the Mediterranean then across the Atlantic via Canaries to the West Indies before heading back to the Med via the Azores. Sold to a Dutch Couple in 1985, they renamed her LouiseBel and sailed her back to the West Indies and has lived there since. In November 2003 I saw her on anchor the first time but wasn't till April 2005 that I purchased her and changing name again to Mahina, meaning Moon Goddess in Polynesian. Mahina is now registered in Malta. After 2 seasons in the Caribbean cruising and doing minor refits, I sailed Mahina Single Handed to Malta, where she presently lies.
Between 2007 till present Mahina has gone through a full refit, getting ready to sail to Australia, departing October 2011, via straits of Gibraltar, Brazil, Panama and South Pacific.
The interior is all in Teak wood. Down the companion way from the cockpit one finds the navigation station on the right with the skipper's bunk behind. Opposite on the left is the fully equipped Galley.
Forward and mid ship, two bunks/seats and another bunk on top, on each side round the centre table. Six can eat comfortable around the saloon table.
Moving forward is the head (toilet), sink and shower, followed by a v-berth, a private cabin for 2 with excellent ventilation from the forward hatch.
Mahina is equipped with a 35hp Yanmar Engine, 3.7Kw Generator, Refrigeration, Webasto Heater, Hot water, Hydrovane Self Steering, Solar Panels, Super Wind Generator, North Radial Main and Genoa, Staysail and Asymetric Socked Spinnaker.
